The dragon is a symbol of Chinese culture and is believed to bring good luck to people. Many times they celebrate with the lion or dragon dances. On the second day, they give each other gifts in red envelopes to symbolize prosperity and happiness, and all gifts are always given in even numbers. People wish each other good luck, happiness, and wealth in the new year. This 15-day festival is often celebrated with dragon dances, lion dances, gift exchanging, and fireworks. It also signals the beginning of spring and is referred to as the spring festival. I love that it signifies saying goodbye to the old and hello to the new. The Chinese New Year is pretty interesting! If you aren’t familiar with it, it’s the biggest holiday celebrated by Chinese people. Holiday traditions are always so important to us! While our family and friends celebrate the new year in January, we often forget that our Chinese friends and family celebrate the Chinese New Year in February to commemorate the Lunar New Year on the Chinese calendar. Then the ball drops and the countdown begins and we all ring in the new year. We pour some bubbly, watch the New Year’s Eve specials, play games, and laugh until our cheeks are sore. My family and I love to get together with some of our closest friends and family to eat, drink, laugh, and make memories.
